故事主要围绕三个看似互无关联的美国家庭展开，一个“看不见”的摄像师“扛着摄像机”记录他们生活中的点点滴滴。这三个家庭也很有代表性：一个是传统的美国中产阶级家庭，一个是老夫少妻的组合，一个是同性恋家庭。
