故事讲述一辆运镖车在押送途中，被一个身穿红棉袄，脚穿绣花鞋蒙面大盗劫走。好事的陆小凤和花满楼，助京中“第一捕快”调查此案。导演楚原将古龙武侠世界的复杂多变，处理得简明而吸引，绣花针、绣花鞋、红棉袄，映像诡异，本片集推理、武侠、香艳于一炉。“绣花大盗”的形象深入民心，间接影射了徐克拍“东方不败”时，用的红线、飞针武功。
